Children who develop healthy habits from a young age are more likely to continue these habits into adulthood.
Did you know….
- Around 1 in 5 NSW children aged 5 to 16 years (21.4%) are above a healthy weight.
- Around 1 in 16 children eat the recommended serves of vegetables each day (7.4%) whilst around 2 in 3 children eat the recommended serves of fruit each day (66.8%).
- Only 1 in 4 children are active enough each day (24.2%).
Time for Healthy Habits is a research study looking at ways to help parents and carers with healthy eating, physical activity and sleep habits in their young child.
What does Time for Healthy Habits involve?
As a part of this study, you will be participating in ONE of the 12-week programs below:
- An online program with six modules and a closed Facebook group
- A telephone counselling program with trained interviewers/coaches
- Printed tip sheets and a summary booklet or an electronic version (to be sent by post or email).
All programs will provide practical information and tips that will help with healthy eating, physical activity, screen time and sleep. These programs are completely free and there is no need to attend appointments. They can be completed in your home at a time which is convenient for you.
For the study, you will be asked to complete three telephone surveys (to collect measurements and information about your child and you, including your child’s height and weight).
The online and telephone programs have shown large health benefits in young children. You can find some feedback from some parents who have completed the programs below:
I have really enjoyed the program and I feel as though I am more conscious of healthy eating habits, sleep patterns, activity and screen time for all of my kids. It has also made me aware of the fact that I am a major role model for my children, and have taken on some of the healthier activities, especially for snacks and physical activity myself.
I thought it was great and learnt a lot about serving sizes. I was able to bounce ideas around with the telephone support [worker] which was hugely beneficial.
I love the practical stuff, you can read as much information as you want, but unless you have examples, it can be hard for people to put that into play.

Who is running the study?
This project is funded by a NSW Ministry of Health Translational Research Grant, and delivered in partnership with the University of Wollongong, the University of Newcastle, Murrumbidgee, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Southern NSW, Hunter New England, and South Eastern Sydney Local Health Districts.
This project has been approved by the South Western Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee, HREC Reference: 18/LPOOL/472
